Day 7 - Sunday, Sept 9 - In Yellowstone
Starting mileage: 2472 Starting time: 8:00 am
Ending mileage: 2658 Ending time: 7:00 pm
Travel mileage: 186 Travel time: 11:00 hours
Today was a banner day for scenery, wildlife and geysers while traveling around Yellowstone.
Words and (my) photos can't adequately express the beauty of Yellowstone and much of the west. We traveled though the Lamar and Yellowstone River valleys, flat grassy areas that lead up to smooth low mountains capped with bright green Lodgepole Pine. Fly fishermen in the rivers could be from a Robert Redford movie. In other areas, we pass steep granite cliffs.
On entering Yellowstone we saw a handsome elk buck. Traveling through the Lamar and Yellowstone valleys we saw many herds of bison and a number of pronghorn antelope. Traveling on a dirt road, a group of four bison were blocking our way. As we went by, I could have almost reached out and touched the bison! Coming back into Gardiner in the evening, we saw several groups of elk wandering along the street.
Walking along the boardwalks in different geyser basins, we saw many amazing examples of the four hydrothermal features, majestic geysers, beautiful blue hot springs, gurgling mudpots and whistling fumeroles. We were especially fortunate to see and photograph the Great Fountain Geyser and the White Dome Geyser erupting at the same time.
