Day 2 - Tuesday, Sept 4 - Streetsboro, OH to Cedar Rapids, IA
Starting mileage: 480 Starting time: 8:00 am
Ending mileage: 1070 Ending time: 4:30 pm
Travel mileage: 590 Travel time: 8:30 hours
The heat and storms are causing quite a problem in the area. Over 100 schools are closed today due to the heat. There was torrential rain and flooding in Cleveland yesterday which affected the air show.
The terrain for the 590 miles that we traveled today was pretty consistent, mostly corn and soybean fields as far as the eye can see, interspersed with farmsteads surrounded by trees. Pretty flat most of the way.
In Elkhart, IN, we passed the RV museum and "Hall of Fame". Elkhart is the world capitol of RV manufacturing.
The traffic from Gary, IN to Chicago was typically terrible but there doesn't seem to be any practical way of avoiding it.
It was again 90 and above most of the day but no rain.
Another plus of our new car is the trial of SeriusXM satellite radio. We can listen to NPR, Classic VInyl (rock music from the 60s and 70s) and of course 'Road Trip" channels. The downside is that we miss the flavor of local radio stations.
When we got to our hotel, we were surprised to see a partially collapsed building across the street, an uprooted tree and damaged fences. When we later watched the local news, we learned that there had been 4 or more relatively small tornadoes in Cedar Rapids. There has also been severe flooding along the Cedar River.
For dinner we went to the Granite City Brewery. When surprisingly, no waitress appeared to take a drink order, we nabbed a waitress going by and asked if she could find our server. She was chagrined and embarrassed to come back a few minutes later to say "I am your server"! Things improved from there.
